Boston Lawyers Learn The Rules of Profitability

BOSTON, October 11, 2007- National law practice management expert, Ed Poll J.D. M.B.A. CMC, delivered a boot camp presentation on small firm profitability sponsored by Lawyers Weekly, Inc. and the Social Law Library in Boston on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Poll, founder of LawBiz® Management Co, informed attorneys about the sound strategies, best practices, and business metrics needed to bolster firm profits.

Lawyers Weekly Vice President Tom Harrison, who introduced Poll, commented, "Lawyers go to law school, not business school. They're often great at helping clients, but struggle to run their firm and compensate themselves and their employees for all their hard work. Ed Poll is a master at showing lawyers how to do well in addition to doing good."

Poll addresses the operations and practice development issues that lawyers are not formally trained to execute. "The business strategies that make a profitable company are the same to running a lucrative law firm," says Poll, who's a former practicing attorney and CEO in the manufacturing industry. "There's a disconnect for lawyers between focusing on the output of a firm in terms of handling case loads and briefs, and crafting a business plan that can insures a formal billing process or marketing strategy."

In his presentation, Poll emphasized the importance of how to run a financially successful and sound firm. One of his underlining themes for the group was creating a streamlined process to bill clients from billable hours with regular invoices. A basic principle of business that is lost in the world of law. He also informed the group on the value of cash flow management, computing fiscal earnings, how and when to increase fees, as well as tips on forecasting for the future.
